Naval Weapons Station Generator Foundation, Concord, California

Hultgren-Tillis Engineers performed geotechnical engineering for two planned generators at the site. Exploration revealed that the site was underlain by a thick stratum of soft, compressible peaty soils. After discussions with the generator manufacturer and the structural engineer, Hultgren – Tillis Engineers showed that the generators could be supported by a stiffened mat foundation. This solution represented a significant cost savings compared to the pile foundation solution specified in the design documents. Hultgren – Tillis Engineers also evaluated several lightweight fills to reduce settlements at the site.
Prior to joining Hultgren – Tillis Engineers, Mr. Muller performed geotechnical engineering for the major expansion to the Naval Weapons Station Pier 3, a 1400-foot-long, 95-foot-wide loop pier. Upgrades included widening the pier and increasing the support capacity of the pier to support two 40-ton capacity cranes.
